Leadership Power Tip 1: Seize An OpportunityClick here to print this page

The one thing about leadership power, and perhaps the thing that defines the leaders from the followers is their ability to seize an opportunity. Those people, who can recognize an opportunity when they see one, and take advantage of it at the right moment, are the ones who are using their leadership power. This tip outlines the importance of grabbing an opening when it first presents itself.

It is all very well for people to say that they did not succeed because they did not get opportunities in life. Life did not give them the breaks that they deserved and which other people were lucky enough to get. But the truth of the matter is that all these are simply excuses.

Being in a country like America, which is regarded as the land of opportunities, it is all but impossible not to get at least a few opportunities in life which can make you a successful leader. But the reason why true leaders are so rare is because people do not take all the opportunities and chances that come their way. As Josh Billings once said, "Occasions are rare; and those who know how to seize upon them are rarer";  leadership only comes to those who know how to seize opportunities.

The only way you can take advantage of opportunities is to have the ability to recognize them. Most people miss out on chances in life simply because they cannot see the opportunity in any given situation or circumstance. The one certain thing about opportunities is that they never seem to come when you want them to and almost never in a form that you expect them to. But if it were so easy to identify a lucky break and grab at it, wouldn't this world be filled with leaders?

Thus, to be able to seize an opportunity and enhance your leadership, you have to always be prepared for an opening. And that can only come when you do not fear hard work and are ready to put in the immense effort that it takes to be successful. If you can do that - toil without worrying about the fruits of such labor - then you will be surprised to see that not only are you getting many more opportunities to be a leader, but are also able to create opportunities where there did not seem to be any.

As Edward De Bono once said, "If you wait for opportunities to occur, you will be one of the crowd." Thus, if you wish to be a true leader utilizing your power, not a follower, you need to put your energies into working hard, continually learning, so that you are always ready to, not just seize an opportunity whenever it arises, but create new opportunities of your own.   Seize an Opportunity and Unleash Your Leadership Power!

All the best to you,Susan West
